Day of Procedure

• Take your usual medications with a sip of water (unless otherwise instructed by your doctor) – If you take medication for diabetes or anticoagulant therapy, your surgeon or anaesthetic will contact you prior to your procedure to discuss your medication management.
• Please bring ALL medications including supplements in their original packaging, in particular insulin.
• Wear loose comfortable clothing such as a shirt/t-shirt or jumper, shorts or track pants and slip on shoes (no laces or long boots).
• Leave valuables such as jewellery at home. The hospital holds no responsibility towards the loss of such items. A wedding ring is permitted but it will need to be removed or taped prior to your procedure.
• Do not wear make-up, perfume or nail polish and if you are having a general anaesthetic please remove all facial and mouth piercings.
• If your procedure is scheduled to take place later in the day (e.g. after 5:00 pm), your assigned escort will need to call the recovery room staff on 1300 118 885 to gain access to the hospital.

• Any scans or X-rays relevant to your surgery
• Your hard contact lens or glasses case as hard contact lenses and glasses will need to be removed before your procedure. You may wear soft lenses during your procedure
• If you have a pacemaker/defibrillator, you MUST bring your information card
• While we make every effort to ensure that you go to theatre as soon as possible after your arrival, occasionally, there are unexpected delays due to a patient(s) before you requiring extra time. Please bring along some reading material to help pass time
• Fully completed hospital forms and any letters or reports from your doctor
• Health insurance membership details
• Medicare card
• Health care card

On the day of admission, please arrive at Unit 6, 33-37 Duerdin Street, Notting Hill VIC 3168

A staff member will promptly guide you to the appropriate admissions desk where the admissions staff will:

• Check your paperwork for completion,
• Collect any out-of-pocket expenses or day hospital fees payable, and
• Let you know your approximate length of stay and discharge time.

Prior to the commencement of your procedure an admissions nurse will guide you through the admission process. They will confirm your name, date of birth, admitting details and doctor. These standard identification procedures will be repeated throughout the day to ensure your safety.

The nurse will also record observations such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and weight.

If at this stage, you need any further explanation about your procedure the admissions nurse will ask for your specialist or anaesthetist to speak to you before you go into theatre.

If you require an anaesthetic for your procedure, your anaesthetist will meet you before you go into theatre to explain the anaesthetic process, answer any questions you may have, and carry out a medical examination.

Once you in the operating theatre/procedure room, you will be introduced to the team looking after you. Again, you will be asked to confirm your name, date of birth, and the procedure you are there for.

If you are having a general anaesthetic, your anaesthetist will administer the anaesthetic and once your procedure is complete you will be transferred to the recovery room.
